People with an ischemic stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA) have an increased risk of recurrent strokes. The risk of another event is high: 10-20% within the first 90 days, and these secondary strokes are much more likely to result in death or severe disability than the initial stroke.

Secondary Stroke Prevention is of vital importance for patients who are recovering from a stroke or TIA; early care including risk reduction, medication management, and close follow-up can significantly improve your long term outcomes and prevent future illness.

At the Wood Buffalo PCN, the Secondary Stroke Prevention Clinic provides care in alignment with Alberta’s Provincial Stroke Strategy. If you’ve had a stroke, you will probably be referred to our clinic by the hospital, or by your local family physician. If you haven’t yet been referred, speak with your family physician and ask about the role of the WB PCN’s Secondary Stroke Prevention Clinic in your follow up care.
